With their debut studio album Learn To Swim and the album’s prominent single “Forgetting You,” Super Groupers continues to generate waves of soulful, conscious Hip Hop from the Pacific to the world. Regarding their inspirations for their newest project, the group stated that "You have to learn to swim before you learn to fly. Before you move on to greater heights, you have to know where you came from and never forget that.”
Super Groupers is a Hip Hop group that consists of Navid Najafi, Illis It, Ohtoro, Aksent, and Kimmy V. Underneath Hawaii’s tropical umbrella, there are many real issues that Hawaii people face. As local residents themselves, Super Groupers seeks to tell those stories through music, with originality and finesse. At the forefront of Learn To Swim is Illis It- a martial artist, tattoo artist, community activist and MC from Kalihi, Navid Najafi- an ex-political refugee from Tehran turned rapper and community activist, and Ohtoro- an ex-high school math teacher from L.A. turned beat producer and chef extraordinaire. Needless to say, Learn To Swim was entirely a group effort and was made possible through generous contributions through their crowdsource campaign.
The concept of Super Groupers started about three years ago. All of the members were solo artists at the time but always collaborated with each other and other artists in the local Honolulu community. The name “Super Groupers” stems from an old story about a grouper fish who left the sea to get a job in Manhattan. He does his job so well that people don't question the fact that he's a fish! However, the fish has to deal with learning to swim in the new world and at the same not forgetting his roots and where he came from. “We threw in some Mad Men themes and style and with that released three EP's, one which was a cassette, and have just finished our first full length Learn To Swim,” said Super Groupers.
2015 has been a busy year for Super Groupers- getting their album together (both digitally and a special vinyl edition), doing promotions, and reaching out to the community for fundraising. They spent the last three years performing over 250 shows on Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, Los Angeles, and New York. Learn To Swim pays homage to the lessons and experiences gained as individual artists, entrepreneurs, as well as a group. Be sure to cop Super Groupers’ Learn To Swim via bandcamp and their other social media plugs. “Hawaii’s diverse music scene is very unique and talented. Lots of great bands and artists are emerging and producing great music. Don't sleep on us! Thank you to all of our supporters and stay tuned for our upcoming projects,” Super Groupers.
