Aloha #OTDHipHop fam & supporters!
I recently got back from a month long trip to my family’s homeland, the Philippines! There's way too much to say about my experience there but I'm so glad it happened. I will be hopefully dropping a vlog and/or some visuals from the trip, as I get situated back into the everyday grind here at home. But nonetheless, welcome back to one of our most popular segments, “Track Tuesday!"
Today I had the pleasure to catch up again with my homie DannnyRose. He was featured on my latest single “Post 2 Be” (Prod. By Syndrome), which dropped before my trip. Dannny dropped his second official video just a few days ago, to his song “On My Own” (Prod. By Cicco) via his YouTube VEVO channel. I'm honestly a big fan of Dannny outside of being his friend/colleague, and have been hooked to his music, vibe, and aesthetic since we initially linked up back in December. “On My Own” is a dope audio single, but I was really excited when he announced the visuals for it via social media.
The song itself is beautifully written & performed by Dannny. Lyrically, it sounds like he's reciting something from his personal diary or journal. As a young man storyteller, he mentions the struggles of growing up in the hood as a Mexican-American, and the challenges in wanting to provide for his mom and family. Big credits to Ninthandcompany, of which produced and edited the video. The video brings the listener into Dannny’s hometown, featuring different angles and shots of the city, as well as working with different lighting and shadows to elevate the song. Personally, I really like how the video matched Dannny’s aesthetics well. His outfits went well with the different scenes and backgrounds.
At one point of the song, Dannny specifically says the line, “RIP my nigga Feds, why the good gotta die?” And I really dig how the camera zooms in on Dannny in that scene, which highlighted the feeling of losing his friend. Towards the end of the video, Dannny’s voice echoes “Yeah I'm just waiting for my shine. This shit gon happen it's just gon take some time..” and ends with “I'm trynna make it out, I'm trynna make it out…” I found those lines and visuals most profound from this project because of the setting and how Dannny shows pride for his hometown but is ultimately trying to “make it out” due to the many challenges and struggles he talks about throughout the song. Overall, Dannny continues to impress his growing fan base with quality soulful raps mixed with hints of trap and R&B. This is a great start to his visual representation, and I look forward to seeing more in the future.
