Aloha and welcome back to #OTDHipHop blog! We are currently continuing the Creative Hustle Tour TAKEOVER, featuring interviews with up and coming artists from Hawaii, Las Vegas, and California. This week, I got to chop it up with an artist/rapper named YungMain, one of the founders and members of the MainSquad team.
It’s the middle of a regular weekday in Honolulu, HI. I just finished work at Aloha Tower Marketplace in downtown, and met up with YungMain to conduct his interview. At first glance, I can see that he has tattoos all over his body, from his face to his hands and legs. He definitely walks, talks, and acts like a local ‘gangsta,’ but even though that is part of him, his love and passion for music and creativity supersedes any exterior representation.
We got to vibin’ outside by the water while he rolled a fat joint, lit it up, and started talking about how he got into music. The whole time, I’m taking notes in my journal, but all I can really see is his passion and motivation to “make it” through whatever he goes through, and how he puts his real life in his music. Growing up on Oahu, he didn’t have much guidance from his parents or household due to language and other social barriers. He was labeled a “bad kid” all his life, so he found his own family in the streets. Hip Hop/Rap was always the top genre that played around him and he started writing and recording raps with some friends about a year ago (Late 2014/Early 2015).
Although he is very confident in what he wants to do and very much aware of his surroundings, he is a hella cool dude and an easy guy to talk to. One thing that stuck out to me was his humility, even stating that “I know I might not be too good right now. But if I improved so much with my music in one year, imagine where I can be in another year or further.” I took a look at his catalog, and found that he doesn’t sound bad at all. The beats, melodies, and rhymes are definitely there. In my opinion, I’d describe YungMain’s style, sound, and aesthetic as a mix between Bone Thugz & Harmony, Nelly, and ScHoolboy Q.
Aside from music itself, I see YungMain as an overall creator. He has an enthusiastic persona about him that is contagious, and I can see why he was able to band some of his homies together through MainSquad. MainSquad is a Hawaii-based team focused on building creative content together. When I asked him what he represents or the message in his music, he simply stated that he represents a different picture of the islands, streetlife in Hawaii. “It’s not all palm trees and beaches here, you live here your whole life and realize it’s not fun and games out here. People gotta work, people gotta eat, and people can get caught up in all kinds of shit,” said YungMain.
Yung Main will be performing at the Creative Hustle Tour’s Maui and Oahu shows. Be sure to support this young man as he continues to chase his dreams and put on for his team and city.
