I recently dropped my demo tape, "The Untitled Episode" last week.
For today's #MondazeRotation, I will be providing commentary on each of the tracks on the project. To preface, all of these tracks are actually about 4 years old and have already been on my Soundcloud. But, I've always felt that these 3 tracks (in order) tell a story of love lost, love gained, and love for self, through the eyes of 21 year old Jehzan as she navigates through the parties, drinking, drugs, girls, and the overall life style of young adulthood. During this particular time in my life, I was insecure of myself - My mom lost her job, I had to quit school momentarily for financial reasons, and we were living temporarily between the houses of the people we were dating and in a small space in my uncle's house. The Untitled Episode is written and presented as if I, the artist, is talking to someone in particular...a subjective "you" per se. You'll hear me say things like "This one's for you," or "I still got love for you" during track breaks or track fade outs. Honestly, I mostly wrote these songs to get the attention of a girl I was interested in. In fact, she's my fiancé now. However, during the creative process, I found that there was a lot more deep stuff that I wanted to share with the world and not simply just with her. I urge you to listen to each track individually in order. Then go back and read my commentary on each track. So here we go, welcome toThe Untitled Episode...
In a nutshell, The Untitled Episode is actually a compilation old remixes I recorded a few years ago. But I believe it was some of my best work as far as story telling and content from back in the day. Hope yall dig it in this new format. Vocals were recorded on Garage Band, on a shitty macbook in a hotel room in Honolulu, on my 21st birthday. Lol. Check it out and let me know what you think!
"One of My Exes" is probably the most popular track on my Soundcloud catalog to date.
I believe this track was suitable as the first episode because it opens the story with me basically talking about my exes, as a way to show that I recognized their fuckery and that I'm done with that part of my life. I believe people dig it because it's raw and unfiltered. The song is a remix, over the instrumental to Lil Wayne's "LaLaLa." Originally, I wrote the lyrics to "One of My Exes" to totally different beat, after being inspired from hearing "One of My Homies" by Shawn Chrystopher. To provide some context, the "exes" mentioned in this song are both literal and fictional. All of the stories mentioned in this song happened, however, multiple incidences could be pointed to a particular person. For example, the song starts off with "One of my exes a bitch. One of my exes a trick. One of my exes, we cool. She still hangs out with my clique." Technically, those opening "bars" all refer to a particular ex of mine, but conceptually, all of my exes are a little bit of bitch, trick, and cool. Yadada mean? Lol. The first verse goes on and on about how various exes did me wrong. But the second verse shows a little more maturity, changing the conversation to "So to the next girl I'm with, hope for none after that. I'm hoping you can see they just the girls from my past.."
Like I said, I broke up with the girl who still had my stuff at her place. I wrote, recorded, and released "One of My Exes" while she was still giving me lip about it. Then I went ahead and wrote "No Lies" as my own remix to 2Chainz & Drake's song "No Lie." Building off of the concept of "One of My Exes," "No Lies" (No Lie Remix) is told with a little more aggression and gets more serious. The difference is that "No Lies" introduces a new girl, and how I don't want her to be my next ex.
"See I'm not trynna get all in your pants and shit. And honestly I don't wanna chance it yet. So I guess it's just best we remain friends. And I'll leave the same way that I came in..."
"Wear My Hat" has a much lighter tone from the two preceding tracks. It focuses more on the courtship/dating part of the budding relationship. It's the least popular from the bunch, probably for its less vulgar (well except the hook) lyrics and lighter vibes. This is the last track of this demo tape/EP and where this story ends.
Of course, this whole project is a projection of my life at a point in time when I was young and just trying to find love, you know what I'm saying? Lol. Hope y'all dig it, and please let me know what you think.
