Big Island’s Hip Hop leader KillaBrex got another single for yall! “UGH” (Prod. Classixs Beats) is one for the rapper’s latest tracks, that recently dropped on Reverbnation. As mentioned in his last #TrackTuesday feature back in September, the transition from 2015 to 2016 has been challenging on this young man, facing personal struggles and having lost a number of close friends. It seemed like KillaBrex spiraled out of control when he moved back to his hometown of Hilo, after learning so much as an intern at Camel Hump Studios in Las Vegas. Regardless, he still faces many challenges but is grinding full-time as an artist/manager/entrepreneur.
“‘UGH’ is for the lost ones in my life that still cross my mind no matter what happened between us. While I was writing the #HVY mixtape, I was in a dark state of mind. I had moved back to the islands and saw most to all of my friends and family lost into drugs or incarcerated. I plummeted into a state of depression and this is what came from those lonely night wondering what was God’s plan. I recently got out of that state of mind and now working on the next project. #HVY will be released in the later months of this year. Thank you guys for continued support and sticking with me through all my rides in life's roller coaster. Aloha.” - KillaBrex
KillaBrex has various gigs/performances lined up for the rest of the year, and has started to plan his own shows and events. Most recently, he hosted the “Life’s Too Short” hip hop night at Hilo Town Tavern a few weekends ago. The event was created as tribute/memorial for Brex’s friend Bryson Samson and his little cousin Deasd Silva. Judging from the feedback I saw on Facebook and conversing with Brex, the show had a great turn-out, and it served as a strong learning experience for the young host/emcee. He is actually planning an intra-island tour (#CreativeHustleTour2017), slated for January. He also already has gigs booked for the tour on the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu (including two interviews booked in Honolulu).

![]() OTD Hip Hop: What is the inspiration behind "Life's Too Short?" KillaBrex: The influence for the name "Life's Too Short" was brought to me after finding out my friend Bryson Samson, had passed away. Still mourning the death of my little cousin Deasd Silva. I was shocked that our once happy town of hilo had become dark and unpleasant. I went into a dark place of depression and secluded myself from the world. While I was sitting reminiscing, the last time I saw Bryson, I was with him at the beach after I came back from Vegas and he was angry and refused to shake my hand, due to him being disappointed in me like I should have stayed up there. Later though he gave me a hug but that impacted me because I knew he wanted me to pursue my dreams and since day one always pushed me to do so... Life's Too Short. Because life is too short, to sit in your sorrow and wait for things to get better, you gotta make the most of the life and make good with what God gives you. So with this show Life's Too Short I am trying to bring together local talent and inspire them to take action and chase their dreams before our time here runs out..RIP Bryson Samson & Deasd Silva. Anyone 21+ who is down to celebrate the lives of two young men and come together for good music, local Hip Hop, and lots of surprises, consider this YOUR INVITE ^_^ OTD Hip Hop: What made you want to be the main event manager for this? Do you have experience in planning small rap shows? KillaBrex: I decided to throw the show to start a movement or renaissance for Big Island Hip Hop. I want to get everyone ambitious and hungry for more shows and to chase their dreams. I have thrown many "illegal parties" before and when offered to throw a show at the tavern, I decided it was time to go legit and get it going. OTD Hip Hop: Have you performed, attended, or put together any other similar shows at Hilo Town Tavern? KillaBrex: I have never performed at the tavern, but there were many huge Hip Hop shows there which is why i decided to go with the hilo town tavern. They have had big names such as Dumbfounded, Murs, and event local celebrities like the Steppas, to J Boog. So I figured it was the best venue in town that could provided a good environment for a Hip Hop show. OTD Hip Hop: What can people expect at the event? (performances, giveaways) KillaBrex: They can expect a night jam packed full of local Hip Hop talent from South Kona to Deep Puna. We will also be giving out donations from our sponsors - Irie Hawaii, Hilo Grown Shop, Stickithi all night. They are giving away glass pieces to grow lights, to even soil to grow, and alot of apparel and stickers. OTD Hip Hop: Since Visual Feelings ENT is a sponsor? Will they be doing any video coverage of anything like that? KillaBrex: We actually are doing video coverage. we will have 4 gopros and 2 cameras set up at event to get the whole thing shot. OTD Hip Hop: Feel free to share anything regarding the artists, DJs, etc. KillaBrex: We have DJ Casey 808 on the spins all night and Junya Sabas from Boomdraw MCing and keeping everyone entertained all night.. |
