Aloha #OTDHipHop NAKAS!
Welcome back to another installment of the CREATIVE HUSTLE TOUR TAKEOVER! Today I got to chop it up with hip hop artist/rapper Duce, representing Waianae on the west side of Oahu. Duce is most known for being ⅓ of the group Common Difference HI (CDHI). However, each of the group members are also solo artists in their own right. Along with Faithful to Hawaii (F.T.H) and other up and coming artists, Duce will be performing at the final show of the Creative Hustle Tour on January 21st at NextDoor in downtown Honolulu.
Duce is a hip hop artist/rapper from the west side of Oahu. He started writing and recording music back in high school. Over the span of about 10 years, he learned a lot about himself and the direction he wants to go. Of those 10 years, he spent 6 of them with CDHI. “It was great, learned a lot, met lots of good people and had tons of fun. I wasn't good at all but perseverance made me better over time,” said Duce. One of the biggest influential things that CDHI did as a group was coin the term “naka,” which is basically used as a term of endearment and community. West side towns like Waianae and Nanakuli are often seen as “ghetto” or “the hood.” But collectively, CDHI used music and the “naka” branding to bring the youth together, and to further push their message of resilience and fun.
Overall, Duce is comfortable and eager as he continues to move in newer directions. He has spent a lot of time in Hawaii’s Hip Hop scene and has also performed on the mainland. “Hawaii’s Hip Hop scene wasn’t always as accepting as it is now. We all grew together and through the years, I have been given nothing but love from everyone. It’s a scene where you need to put some WORK in order to be seen but once they see it, they don’t forget and always show the artists love” said Duce.
For the past months, Duce has been working on Trap Tendencies, his debut solo project for the new year. In regards to the theme of the project, he stated, “basically I capture my life as it is now...all the joy, pain, happiness, sadness, triumphs, and failures. I can’t wait to release and let everyone see how much has changed over the last year. I'm on a whole new level.” Duce has been spending lots of time at the Signature Sound Studio, with engineer Bobby of Aloha Hype. Duce’s Trap Tendencies EP is slated to release in a number of weeks.
For more on Duce, follow him on Soundcloud. Don’t forget to see him LIVE at NextDoor on January 21st as part of the final show of the Creative Hustle Tour!
