Over this past Labor Day weekend, I interviewed KillaBrex, a Hip Hop Artist/Rapper and aspiring entrepreneur from the town of Hilo, HI. Last year, I wrote an article on KillaBrex and his experience at interning at Camel Hump Studios in Las Vegas. It seemed like things were going well for this young man but due to personal challenges, he decided to move back to the Big Island. The rapper confessed that 2015 was a hard year for him as he suffered from depression due to losing his best friend and certain opportunities and business ideas that didn’t fall through while in Vegas. Nonetheless, KillaBrex is starting from scratch, including his recent name change from Killa “B-Rex” to simply KillaBrex, (in my opinion I dig the name change).
Despite the challenging year, KillaBrex is working on a mixtape and organizing a Hip Hop showcase event in his home town. He is also a cofounder of Faithful to Hawaii (FTH), which is a community of artists, musicians, producers, videographers, rappers, and supporters that was created to provide an online platform to showcase Hawaii’s talent and especially its unique Hip Hop culture. KillaBrex recently dropped his first track off his upcoming HVY mixtape. The track, “Fight It,” was produced by Axsthxtic and features another Hilo native known as rapper LogCabLow (Chris Low). The song speaks on KillaBrex’s vices and low key lifestyle that he’s had in the past year. “I’m not gonna lie, and I don’t hide anything. But I had my fun when I got back battling my depression. Music, drugs, and girls were my vices” said KillaBrex.
KillaBrex might not look like a role model, and he might not be. But on the daily, he is a young man trying to build a life for himself. In a small town like Hilo, he continues to do what he can to perpetuate Hip Hop culture and is a big supporter of other local artists. Along with Visual Feelings ENT, he’ll be hosting the“Life’s Too Short” Hip Hop Live Showcase at Hilo Town Tavern, on Friday, October 14th. “Inspiration for the event basically came from losing a lot of homies recently and music is what helps me get through it. I figure I just start doing something now and since I already know some local artists eager to perform, putting an event together felt right,” said KillaBrex. Stay tuned for more from KillaBrex, his upcoming mixtape HVY, and more FTH content. For more on KillaBrex, visit his Facebook page.
