Hawaii Hip Hop is hella turnt this week and it’s just getting started. Justin “Bone” and his network got the Iron MC Challenge starting up again, along with two cypher/rap shows in downtown Honolulu tonight and tomorrow. We just had the G-Eazy do a show, and a lot of local opening acts continue to grow. One young fella that is makin’ a name for himself in the indie hip hop world is Jason “Jet” Jones.
Jet has been part of the Hawaii Hip Hop scene for about 6 years. As a young man, he has spent most of his early 20s hanging out with friends, working, and learning all he can musically. In a short time span, Jet has shown true potential as an MC and even further as a beat maker and overall “tech” man when it comes to mixing vocals.
The son of two military parents, Jet and his family moved around a lot. He mentions some of his roots in the east coast but has spent most of his youth and young adulthood in Hawaii, which he proudly calls home. Jet has performed at various Hawaii Hip Hop shows and venues, especially at The Loft and The Dragon Upstairs. Networking has led him to collaborate on projects with many artists as a rapper and/or producer.
Listen to “Chinatown,” an original track by Jet. It won't be long till you hear the styles of Big Sean, Kid Ink, and Drake in Jet’s sounds. “I followed Kid Ink closely when I first started. That showed me how to make good hooks and I eventually made it into my own style,” said Jet. The rapper produces most of his own beats and writes all his lyrics, and also offers some of his mixing and beat making services. If you’re on the island of Oahu, hit up Jet for some dope verses, hooks, and beats! You can also catch him at local open mics in the cyphers, performing, and networking.
